What Are Oat Flakes & What Machines Are Used for Processing?

Synopsis

Many clients interested in setting up an oat‑flake processing plant want to know what machinery is needed for the entire production line and how much budget is required. Win Tone provides matching single machines and complete oat flake processing lines for small and medium-sized plants.

Oat flakes are healthy whole‑grain food, but raw oats cannot be flaked directly. A complete set of dedicated grain‑processing machinery handles each processing step to produce whole‑kernel oat flakes or cut‑kernel quick‑cook (instant) oat flakes with different eating textures.

Many clients interested in setting up an oat‑flake processing plant want to know what machinery is needed for the entire production line and how much budget is required. Win Tone provides matching single machines and complete oat flake processing lines for small and medium-sized plants. We also offer fully automated PLC turnkey oat-flake project solutions.

Cleaning & Impurity‑Removal Machine
Cleaning and impurity removal adopts vibrating sieve, air separation and destoning to get rid of stones, grass seeds, dust, shrivelled kernels and iron scraps from raw oat grains. This machine features high screening efficiency and can grade oat grains by size, facilitating the subsequent dehulling process.

Besides oat flake production lines, cleaning machines are essential for processing other grains like corn, wheat, rice, and beans. This is a necessary step in all grain processing.

Oat Dehuller
Oats are a unique grain with a hard, inedible husk. Before steaming and rolling, this husk must be removed to keep the oat groats intact.

Since oat grains are relatively soft, the Win Tone HTP-80 Oat Dehuller uses a flexible impact dehulling method. Its impact speed is adjustable to accommodate different oat varieties, such as Australian, Russian, and Canadian oats. Its biggest advantage is reducing the breakage rate, improving oat groat integrity, and enhancing the quality of the final rolled flakes.

Steam Conditioning & Cooking Machine
Hulled oat groats cannot go directly to flaking. They are fed into the steam conditioning‑cooking machine for softening. Steam‑treated softened oat groats become flexible so they will not crack easily during subsequent flaking.

This unit supports flexible adjustment of steam temperature and holding time to match different softness requirements for whole‑kernel oats or cut‑kernel oats. Steam conditioning also brings out rich natural oat flavour and improves eating quality of finished oat flakes.

Groats Cutting Machine
The kernel cutter is key equipment for quick‑cook oat‑flake manufacturing. Large oat groats are evenly sliced into 2‑4 uniform pointed segments by rotating hard‑alloy cutters inside the machine. Sliced oat segments produce evenly‑thick flakes with good rehydration performance, ideal for nutritious breakfast products.

Win Tone YMQL‑56 Drum Cutting Machine is made entirely of stainless steel, suitable for cutting oats, barley, wheat, and rice. The material is safe, reliable, and meets EU standards.

Oat Flaking Machine (Rolling Machine)
The flaking mill is the core machine of the entire oat flake production line. Steamed and softened oat groats or cut oat segments are fed between two heavy rollers rotating in opposite directions to press the grains into thin flakes. By adjusting the gap between the rollers, you can produce thicker traditional oat flakes (usually 0.65mm–0.76mm thick) or thin instant flakes (usually 0.3mm–0.5mm thick).

Win Tone flaking mills offer stable pressure. The rolled oat flakes are uniform in thickness, smooth in surface, resistant to breakage, and easy to brew, making them highly popular among customers and in the market.

Fluid‑Bed Drying & Cooling Machine
The fluidized bed dryer and cooler handle the final drying and cooling. Freshly rolled wet oat flakes have high moisture content and a soft texture. Hot air blows upward from the bottom of the fluidized bed, suspending and drying the flakes. Cold air is then introduced to cool them down, reducing the moisture content to safe storage levels. Finally, screening machines sort the qualified oat flakes into different grades for various market demands.
